Household Recycling

The City of Bristol, in partnership with Waste Management of the Tri-Cities, Inc., operates a voluntary drop-off recycling program for it's citizens. This program is part of the City's twenty year solid waste management plan and is meant to educate people regarding the benefits of recycling, promote recycling in the community and conserve valuable landfill space.

Drop off containers were located at each school within the City on October 4, 2004, except Virginia High School, where a container will be placed by November 1, 2004. There is also a container located at the City's Solid Waste Management Facility at 2125 Shakesville Road.

Items that can be collected at this time are mixed paper, plastics, tin, steel and aluminum cans. Mixed paper includes newspaper, junk mail and magazines. No cardboard is accepted, nor is glass. Items that can be accepted are determined by the Material Recovery Facility to whom the items are delivered and not by the City.

There is no cost to the public for this service and citizens of Bristol are encouraged to utilize the location most convenient to them. Recyclables will be collected comingled, so there is no necessity to separate the various commodities. It is necessary to rinse out containers that have held food or liquid products.

If you have questions about this program, call 276-645-3791.

CRT/Electronics Recycling

It is desirable to divert CRT (Cathode Ray Tube) and used electronic appliances from landfills because they contain metallic and gaseous elements that may cause environmental problems over time and because many of them contain elements that are reusable or that can be converted to another use.

Examples of items that can be recycled are discarded computers, monitors, televisions, VCRs, tape players, DVD players, radio and stereo components, fluorescent light tubes and most other electronic equipment.

These items will be collected at curbside on regular waste collection days. CRT/Electronic items for recycling SHOULD NOT be placed in regular waste containers, but set beside the container for separate collection. Fluorescent light tubes should be placed in an empty cardboard box or in bags to prevent scattering and breakage.

Collection will be conducted by a Public Works Collection Division vehicle already in service for the collection of furniture and large items. No additional vehicles or personnel are required for this service and there is no additional fee.

Questions should be directed to the Public Works Collection Division at 276-645-7380.
