Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day

On Saturday, May 11, 2002, the City of Bristol, Virginia sponsored the first semi-annual Household
Hazardous Waste Collection Day at its 2103 Shakesville Road Public Works Department Shop. This
service provides the citizens of Bristol, Virginia an opportunity to dispose of those items, common to
all households, that are not collected during the City’s regular waste collection program. Citizens
of Bristol, Virginia who have these types of materials to dispose of should bring them to the Public
Works Shop during the hours indicated.

FALL: 4th Saturday in October

The following is a list of the types of materials accepted and those prohibited by this program:

Acceptable Wastes

Antifreeze Gasoline Paint & Thinners
Adhesives Herbicides Solvents
Aerosols Kerosene Pool Chemicals
Batteries Mercury Debris Propane Tanks
Cleaners Pesticides Used Oil
Fertilizers

Acceptable waste should be: Limited to 5 gallons or to 75 pounds of material from any given vehicle on any given day; Delivered in structurally sound and sealed containers; Delivered in labeled containers (when possible) or contents known to individual bringing in waste.

This service is limited to citizens of the City of Bristol, Virginia and proof of residency will be required
if the vehicle transporting the material does not display a valid City sticker. Proof of residency may
include a valid driver’s license, current City real estate or personal property tax bill or receipt or the
like. There is no charge to the resident for this service.

A reminder tag will be placed on the handle of each residential waste collection cart two weeks prior
to the HHW Collection Day. The tag will provide information on times, location, types of material
accepted and a telephone number for inquiries.

This free service helps residents dispose of problem materials that pose a threat to the environment if
improperly handled, and aids the City in its efforts to provide safe and efficient waste management
services to its citizens and the region.
