Bristol Quarry Landfill Receives International Award

BRISTOL, VA – October 26, 2001 On October 18 the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) awarded the City of Bristol, Virginia its prestigious 2001 Landfill Management Excellence Silver Award and 2001 Landfill Management Excellence Innovation Award at the annual WasteCon Conference held in Baltimore, Maryland. Bristol was the only double award winner in the Landfill Management Excellence category.

The goal of SWANA’s awards program is to encourage the development of technically and economically sound municipal solid waste programs that are protective of public health and the environment. The Excellence Awards Program is meant to showcase those organizations whose municipal solid waste programs have achieved a high level of success. Begun in 1999, SWANA’s Innovation Excellence Awards recognize facilities, systems and programs from within the pool of applicants for the thirteen awards categories who are singled out for their commitment to innovation and creativity.

The award application and review associated with this award is extensive and requires three years of performance in an operating mode before an application can be submitted. The landfill awards also have competition from several

thousand facilities in the US, Canada and Mexico. The SWANA review team then conducts an inspection audit of all finalists before making a final decision on award recipients.

The project was fashioned out of Bristol’s need for a far-reaching solid waste management plan. As the City’s existing landfill continued to take on waste and the abandoned quarry adjacent to the existing landfill continued to create public hazard, ingenuity and planning by city officials allowed for construction of a brand-new, state-of-the-art facility from the abandoned quarry.
