The Street Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department, under the direction of the City Engineer, is the public agency charged with the primary responsibility for maintenance of the City's streets, sidewalks, storms sewer system(s) and other basic infrastructure.
They perform minor to mid-level construction projects for the betterment or extension of City systems, including road building and widening, drainage projects, landscaping and slope stabilization, sidewalk and curb and gutter construction, to name the most obvious.
They execute various traffic engineering functions such as pavement marking, sign fabrication, placement and repair and providing, erecting and removing traffic control devices for special events such as parades, neighborhood functions and race weekends.
They are charged with sweeping the streets, spill cleanup and other special clearing and cleaning activities as well as snow removal and ice control in inclement winter weather.
The City of Bristol has in excess of 300 lane miles of public street, ranging from multi-lane arterials to two lane, winding subdivision streets. These streets have literally thousands of street name, regulatory, warning and directional signs placed on them. They have miles of storm sewer and pipe underdrains beneath them, beside them and placed in easements between them. Hundreds of miles of curb, curb and gutter, sidewalks and thousands of drainage structures are integral to them.
Maintaining this array of public facilities is a daunting task. It takes the efforts of a team of dedicated, professional public employees to perform this function and they cannot do it by themselves. They have established, routine maintenance programs and plans to assist them, but these, by themselves, are insufficient.
They rely to a marked degree on information reported by the public. The citizen who drives a street daily, or lives on it, or routinely visits a friend or relative on it, is a far better monitor of the condition of the street and its accouterments than a computer maintenance program or a few City employees attempting to keep up with a myriad of problems on hundreds of miles of street.
The following is a list of the type(s) of problems routinely reported to the Division by the public, and beneath it is a phone number and an email address where you may bring these problems to our attention:
- Potholes
- Damaged or broken sidewalk, curb or curb and gutter
- Damaged or blocked storm drains or inlets
- Damaged City property such as guardrail, poles, grates, etc.
- Damaged or missing signs
- Minor drainage problems
- Dead or dying trees or shrubbery in street rights-of-way (other than unimproved alleys)
- Other needed street repairs (paving requests are routed to the Engineering Division)
- Limbs or brush blocking a street sign or traffic signal
- Rights-of-way (other than unimproved alleys) in need of mowing
- Street sweeping requests
- Other maintenance problems not specifically enumerated*
