The Bristol, Virginia Police Department's
bike patrol unit consists of 10 specially trained/certified officers.
These officers serve primarily on a regular patrol shift, but are employed
as needed in a bike patrol function.
The bike patrol
is used for parades, community gatherings, downtown patrol and
provides community policing services. The bike officers occasionally
direct and participate in bicycle rodeos for children. Area businesses
frequently donate bicycles and/or bike safety gear, to be given
as prizes during these rodeos.
Patrolling on bikes
enables these officers to respond quickly to areas of crime during
extreme vehicle congestion. The bikes also place the officers
close and accessible to the public, enhancing community policing
efforts.
