The Criminal Investigations Division (CID) is a specialized unit with the responsibility of handling those criminal investigations which require special expertise because of their complexity or for geographical considerations which make it impractical for completion by Patrol Officers.

CID has also been assigned functional responsibilities in the areas of organized crime, intelligence, surveillance and supervision of their sections. Investigators process crime scenes, analyze crime patterns and criminal intelligence using modern resources and techniques. The Division's responsibilities also include:

Investigating major crimes, such as death of a violent or suspicious nature; rapes or suspected rapes; assaults with serious injury resulting in hospitalization; robberies; burglaries; child abuse cases; major disasters; hostage situations; kidnapping; and bombings.

Performing background investigations of applicants for employment with the Department, background investigations of applicants for concealed weapons permits, and investigations in major internal affairs as assigned by the Division Commander or the Chief of Police.

Assisting Patrol Officers in preliminary investigations.

Investigating child abuse cases, providing investigative support to the Commonwealth's Attorney, and acting as liaison with and assisting other law enforcement agencies.

Members assigned to this division have received specialized training in the areas of crime scene photography, collection and preservation of crime scene evidence and the abilities to interview and question witnesses and suspects.
