The Bristol, Virginia Police Department offers the citizens of the area the opportunity to participate in a "Citizens Academy" which is designed to allow them to experience some of the flavor of what a sworn officer goes through in his/her training. These are offered on an annual basis and those applicants who pass the required background investigation are then invited to attend the Academy. Classes offered include Basic Law, Search and Seizure, The Role of Law Enforcement, Defensive Tactics, Firearms Safety, and (8) hours of observation with a Patrol Officer.
