About the Division

The Patrol Division of the Bristol Virginia Police Department (BVPD) consists of 32 police officers. There are four shifts with 8 officers each. This includes a lieutenant as the shift commander.

Assigned Shifts

Officers work twelve-hour days with rotating days off. Patrol works non-rotating shifts. Day shift is 6 AM-6 PM and night shift is 6 PM-6 AM . The City of Bristol is approximately 13 square miles and has a population of about 18,000 people. The city is divided into four patrol zones. A patrol officer is assigned to each zone with senior officers and supervisors normally roving.

Responsibilities

The Patrol Division is charged with duties including:

  • Traffic enforcement
  • Accident investigation
  • Answering calls for service
  • Nighttime security checks of businesses
  • Working school zones

Officers are expected to spend time out of each shift doing community policing activities. This is so that the BVPD can maintain a good relationship with the community and be more responsive to its needs.
